Federal Minimum Wage Rate Increased to $7.25 Per Hour

On July 24, 2009, the federal minimum wage rate increased to $7.25 per hour from $6.55 per hour.  Both New York and New Jersey’s minimum wage rates also rose from $7.15 per hour to $7.25 per hour because States’ minimum wage rates cannot be less than the prevailing federal minimum wage rate.  Despite this increase, Connecticut’s minimum wage rate will remain at $8.00 per hour because it is greater than the federal minimum wage rate.  Employers are encouraged to update their payrolls immediately to reflect this increase.
